Weaving the personal and systemic threads...

Dear Reader,

We’ve got a bunch of things to talk about today, so grab a cuppa, put your feet up and soak in this latest newsletter!

Checking in with our latest series of research inquiries in the lead up to our upcoming conference Diverse States of Getting Along, meet Bec and Beck – also known as The Bec/ks (they really should form a band)

Yep. That’s the band album cover right there. Sorry if it made you spill your tea.

They’ll be presenting Session 3 - the interactive Blurred boundaries: personal & systemic shifts in group dynamics.

We asked them - what is the research question/s that is driving this work you are doing?

“We’re both always holding about a hundred questions, but the question that really started this was –

What is the connection between the personal experiences and the systemic aspects when conflict happens in groups that are trying to work on social change?

It was born from both of our work supporting groups to get curious and work with conflict and power. We were both experiencing how people would sometimes judge experiences as solely personal, or its opposite - thinking that they were just working on the systemic issues. Process Work sees them all as parts of the same thing, but we realised many others didn’t make that connection, and it made us get granular – asking ourselves: when and how do these shifts between the personal and systemic happen, when do they get in the way of the real work and even more importantly how can we use them for purpose?

We are very excited about sharing and applying these ideas with participants in relationship to the morning’s work with Mark Yettica- Paulson and Jane Martin (on the Three leadership gardens followed by experiential live group processing – Seeding After the Fire - exploring what comes after the Referendum). The way we see it is that this work is not just work for facilitators or people working in social change movements, its work for everyone who resides in this country. It is personal. It is systemic. Both are needed and we all have a part to play.

Given that power is such a huge contributing factor to conflict, we were also exploring the relationship in conflict between personal power and structural power. People not identifying with where they have power is one of the biggest contributors to conflict – we all naturally identify with where we don’t have power rather than where we do. When we can understand more about what signals are happening in the moment and why – it makes us both show up better in groups and relationships but also be better able to use what we are learning in relation to achieving a bigger purpose.”

If you are keen to learn with the Bec/ks and be part of a community of people working at depth – whether it be in their own personal development, in therapy, coaching, social change, organisational or facilitation contexts – grab your spot and join us.

Dear Reader, This month's newsletter focuses on 'the calling': how we support ourselves to listen to, focus on, and unfold the signals arising within and around us. But let’s start with a word on why this can be hard. Most of us have stayed with a familiar path at some point, even while quieter signals were suggesting another. In many ways it's deeply human. The known track feels safe, and our communities and larger systems often settle into well-worn tracks too. Sometimes those tracks...

Dear Reader, Spring is nature's own celebration of diversity, a riot of new colours, shapes and forms all emerging together, each different, each essential to the whole. And so too with our upcoming programs that we are delivering in spring and summer! This newsletter is focused on skills to support diversity because diversity lies at the heart of Process Work. It begins with the concept of Deep Democracy, the listening and valuing of all parts, knowing that different energies all have their...

Dear Reader, This month’s newsletter is inspired by poetry. The poet’stask is simple. He looks for quiet, and speaks to whathe finds there.David Whyte, Excerpt from The Poet So we invite you to become a poet for a moment. What do you hear in the quiet? In your body? In the world? In your relationships? In your dreams? What do you find there? Make a few notes. We begin by slowing down, seeking quiet so we can hear more clearly. We can consider other types of listening too – listening to tiny...
