when facilitating "by the book" just doesn't cut it

Dear Reader

Just reaching out to let you know that the final cohort of the 2024 Facilitation Masterclass Series is now open (but closing soon).

The world needs good facilitators – it always has, but it really does feel like in this next phase of humanity, it's becoming an increasingly vital skill. The level of complexity we are juggling feels off the charts.

Structured facilitation processes can be amazing and get us part of the way, but the complexities we face together need more than formulas and step-by-step models. It requires facilitators who can be responsive to what is uniquely happening in that group, in that moment.

This means we need people who can hold groups in uncertainty. We need facilitators who can support groups to harness their differences. We need facilitators who can help groups see themselves, and frame what is emerging in the moment in order to develop aligned action. We need facilitators who can support groups with discomfort, and conflict and always - for their purpose.

The Facilitation Masterclass series has been designed to support facilitators with what we believe are the key areas of facilitation that enable you to do this.

Innerwork – to be able to work on yourself and use yourself as a barometer for the group.

Role Dynamics – to use role theory to understand common structures and how they manifest in groups in order to both be able to predict, and work in the moment with challenging dynamics.

Working at the Learning Edge – to support groups to explore what is emerging and getting in the way of their work together, and where the energy is to keep things fresh and alive.

Negotiating Agreement – to be able to support groups to surface, navigate and negotiate their differences in order to support more congruent decision-making.

Power, Rank and Privilege in the Facilitator role – to understand the background dynamics of power and how they influence our and our groups' behaviour, and be able to make interventions that support groups to be safer and more equitable.

Participants from our March 2024 cohort describe the experience:

I have absolutely loved the content and course! It's been so valuable in deepening and expanding my practice, and I've appreciated what I've been able to bring in and apply to my work with groups.
It's been such a great deep dive - so well facilitated by two wonderful people AND the content was well curated for each week.
It has been a great course full of relevant and useful topics. I'm already applying them in my practice and with clients. Bec and Jane are a great team. Clearly highly skilled and knowledgeable.

So if you’re tired of feeling unsure about what's happening under the surface of stuck/cycling groups ...

Dear Reader, This month's newsletter focuses on 'the calling': how we support ourselves to listen to, focus on, and unfold the signals arising within and around us. But let’s start with a word on why this can be hard. Most of us have stayed with a familiar path at some point, even while quieter signals were suggesting another. In many ways it's deeply human. The known track feels safe, and our communities and larger systems often settle into well-worn tracks too. Sometimes those tracks...

Dear Reader, Spring is nature's own celebration of diversity, a riot of new colours, shapes and forms all emerging together, each different, each essential to the whole. And so too with our upcoming programs that we are delivering in spring and summer! This newsletter is focused on skills to support diversity because diversity lies at the heart of Process Work. It begins with the concept of Deep Democracy, the listening and valuing of all parts, knowing that different energies all have their...

Dear Reader, This month’s newsletter is inspired by poetry. The poet’stask is simple. He looks for quiet, and speaks to whathe finds there.David Whyte, Excerpt from The Poet So we invite you to become a poet for a moment. What do you hear in the quiet? In your body? In the world? In your relationships? In your dreams? What do you find there? Make a few notes. We begin by slowing down, seeking quiet so we can hear more clearly. We can consider other types of listening too – listening to tiny...
